sprmrkt.

I was surfing spottedbylocals/amsterdam the other day and read about SPRMRKT, a chain of boutiques whose portfolio of brands will give any hipster butterflies:

maison martin margiela
damir doma
unconditional
helmut lang
raf simons
rick owens
acne
gareth pugh
...and much more

Each of the 4 stores (sprmrkt, spr+, sprmrkt sth, spr specials) have their own unique concept, design, and set of brands.  Today I paid a visit to spr specials: a two-story shop that sells last season's collections at a 50% discount on the first floor and temporarily houses a different designer every 100 days on the ground floor (currently: Scandinavian designer Henrik Vibskov).  Although I didn't purchase anything this time around (the dreary weather didn't put me in the shopping / buy things I don't need mood), I'm definitely looking forward to visiting the other stores as well as this store again in the future.

chinese-themed (?)

I am almost always turned off by anything overtly Chinese-themed, decorated with Chinese characters, calligraphy, dragons, pandas, bamboo, bright colored embroidery, jade, etc.  China is rooted in thousands of years of history, but these stereotypical images do not define what China is today.  Chinese people are very proud of their heritage and culture, but that doesn't mean that they want these images plastered everywhere.  As China's global standing as a superpower rises, the Chinese continue to embrace the West.  But the use of the same stereotypical images over and over again just perpetuates the perception that China is still stuck in the past.

This post was inspired by Ralph Lauren's Fall 2011 womenswear collection.  He opened the show with Chinese model Sui He, and as each look that made its way down the runway, the Chinese theme was incorporated in different elements: bold red lips, jade earrings, red shoes, embroidered silk tops, statement necklaces, cheongsam (traditional dress), silk dresses, gold dragons... I thought to myself, "Why would a quintessential American brand produce such tacky Chinese-inspired designs?"  Okay, I get it -- Ralph Lauren is trying to appeal to the increasingly important wealthy Chinese consumer.  But by taking the "East Meets West" theme very literally, the collection fell flat and was a hot mess.  This collection was reminiscent of Chanel's Pre-Fall 2010 collection that showed in Shanghai, which consisted of similar tacky elements.  Ralph Lauren's collection was more Chinese than Vivienne Tam's, and that's saying something.  At least Vivienne Tam's collection was subtle, chic, and tasteful.

Note to Ralph Lauren (and other designers):  Careless use of jade, red and embroidery is surely not the way to the wealthy Chinese consumer's heart.

Ralph Lauren Fall 2011:

I don't think bucket hats have been flattering since...ever.
Chinese people are not fishermen anymore.

Wearable, but not very original.

My least favorite look of all.

smaak (that).

I was never a huge fan of shopping in Amsterdam... until this weekend.  I explored the 9 streets (9 straatjes) in the Jordaan for the first time with a group of friends and immediately fell in love.  It's a West Village-esque area with really cute boutiques, specialty shops and cafes.  I've been living in Amsterdam for 6 months now and didn't know this shopping haven existed until now -- totally appalled with myself.

During the shopping excursion, I discovered a Dutch handbag brand: Smaak.  The bags are made with gorgeous, soft leather so light that I can carry it around all day without straining my shoulder/back.

nyfw headgear.

Winter isn't even over yet and I'm already coveting clothes for the upcoming FW season.  But seriously, who doesn't want this beautiful furry hat from The Row?  My favorite headpiece by far.

us vogue featuring lady gaga.

US Vogue's March cover features Lady Gaga dressed in Haider Ackermann with a pink bob, bleached eyebrows and dark plum lips.  Inside the issue, Gaga wears Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton, Hussein Chalayan, and more Haider Ackermann.  I was really excited for Gaga's first US Vogue cover, but I'm not feeling the futuristic-androgynous look on her at all -- why did they have to style her like this?

On the other hand, the cover for her new single, Born This Way, is so hot.  I mean, who doesn't want pointy shoulders?

This documentary provides a raw, gripping look into the modeling world.  Featuring Sara Ziff, a successful model from NY, and filmed by Ole Schell, a documentary filmmaker and her boyfriend at the time, it chronicles her life from 18 when she became a full time model until 23 when she decided to attend Columbia. She provides honest insight into the challenges young models face through her own experience as well as interviews with other models and industry insiders.

lindsey wixson.

Lindsey has been a rising star in the modeling world for the past two years and it's probably safe to say that, with a lengthy profile in today's WWD, she's made it.  Originally from Kansas, Lindsey caught the attention of the fashion world when she was booked by Steven Meisel for Italian Vogue back in 2009.  Since then, she has walked for the biggest fashion houses, posed for global magazines, and been the face of Miu Miu, John Galliano, Versace and Alexander McQueen, to name a few.  Her signature looks: pillowy lips, sexy pout and gap teeth.  Now at 16 years old, she has a life that most girls would die for: she jet-sets around the world for shows and shoots, receives designer freebies, and gets invited to the best parties -- oh yeah, Jason Wu is designing her prom dress.  What more can a girl ask for?

- Black leggings, Uniqlo
- Black cardigan, vintage Anteprima
- Black woven socks, Uniqlo

(lack of) color, theyskens' theory.

Recently, a friend asked if I wanted to go shopping with him sometime for spring/summer clothes since his wardrobe was lacking in color.  My response: color is overrated.

As an undergrad, I wore lots of bright colors: orange, red, pink, baby blue, green -- you name it, I wore it.  After I moved to NY, I gradually collected more black, white and grey, and less of everything else.  Perhaps this was a result of having to wear suits daily or because neutral colors conveyed the mature image suitable for a college graduate.  Whatever the instigator, I enjoy wearing neutral shades because they are easy to mix, match and layer.  I rarely get tired of the clothes and people are less likely to notice repeat offenders when the outfit doesn't involve bright colors.

I still have color in my wardrobe and do enjoy wearing a purple dress or red shirt form time to time, but most of the time, color is usually featured in my accessories (e.g., shoes, scarves, jewelry).

As for my friend, maybe color is more his thing -- I guess we'll see :)

Speaking of neutrals, the new Olivier Theyskens for Theory collection is on sale now.  After leaving Nina Ricci last March, Theory hired Theyskens to design a capsule collection in May, appropriately titled "Theyskens' Theory".  Then in October, the label appointed Theyskens as Artistic Director.  The Spring 2011 capsule collection is beautiful and will no doubt sell very well, especially to the young working professional females who covet stylish pieces that are also work appropriate.  Theyskens stays true to the label's simple, chic silhouette, while adding a little more romance, luxe and sophistication.

It also looks like he added a little bit of himself (literally) into the looks -- is it just me or does the model bear some resemblance to Theyskens himself?
